Choosing Your Seer and The Ethics of Divination

Posted on March 24, 2022February 3, 2023 by Rachel Herrera

People who work in mystical professions have their regulatory bodies and codes of practice to follow. But self-taught people can sometimes feel like they are in a grey area when it comes to how they should deal with the public. This can be unclear for clients who don’t know what to look for when choosing someone for a reading.

Ethical Principle For Practitioners

People who practice divination should always follow ethical principles. I talked with a group of astrologers, and they all said the same thing- that there are specific problems all readers face when their clients come for advice. These include dealing with difficult questions, the possibility of tragic events, what to do when people have depression or issues they cannot handle without professional help.

Though there are no black-and-white answers, diviners should never forget the three ethical principles: client welfare comes first, not harm, and informed consent.

Client Welfare Comes First

Do No Harm

When it comes to divination, the priority is always the client’s welfare. This means that diviners must never give readings that would exploit their clients’ vulnerabilities. Moreover, one who is only interested in making money from a client is not acting ethically.

The second ethical principle is “do no harm.” This means that diviners should never use their skills to manipulate or control other people. Light seers should use divination to empower people, not to control them.

Informed Consent

The third ethical principle is informed consent. This means that diviners should make sure their clients understand what they are getting into before they give a reading. Clients should know that divination is not a perfect science and that the diviner cannot always be 100% accurate.

As a practitioner, I think the best position is to have a set of solid values concerning your work that accord with your spiritual perspective. Being a person who tries to live her life by Christian and Buddhist teachings, I ask myself, What is my motivation in doing this kind of work?

The answer that initially springs to mind is to help others by giving them the insights gleaned from reading, but it is more than that. It is to empower others to choose how to deal more effectively with problems in their lives by giving them information. Encouraging clients to become dependent on more and more readings is not ethical.

Client Perceptions

People usually become dependent on divination readings when they believe that the reading reveals their fate- a future is written in stone and unavoidable.

People feel like they are puppets on a stage and that someone else is controlling what happens. If they get the wrong answer to their questions, it can cause stress. People can also pressure readers to tell them what they want to hear by asking the same question repeatedly until they get the correct answer.

The Reality In Tarot

Tarot cards show potential, trends, and possibilities for a person at any given time. They never offer a person’s future without their free will. Readers need to show clients how they have choices and need to be proactive in their lives.

If you want someone to give you an honest reading about what is possible for you, then look for a reader who can explain things in a way that makes sense to you.

Conclusion

It is important to always feel in control of your choices. Divination is meant to provide guidance, not intimidate you. Both the seer and the client should approach readings with an exploratory mindset rather than a predictive one. Clients should ask questions like “How do you work?” and “Are there only one or multiple answers to my question?” to feel the diviner’s style.

This will help you determine if they are someone you feel comfortable working with. If you feel like the diviner is trying to control you or your choices, then it is time to end the reading. Remember, divination is meant to empower you, not control you.
